On 6 August at 8:00 p.m. continuing the initiated series of musical cinema evenings, the black-and-white film “All night long” (Visu nakti), created in 1962, will be screened at the Great Hall of Liepaja concert hall after an introductory lecture by art scientist dr. philol. Viktors Freibergs.

Musical drama “All night long” directed by Basil Dearden is one of the most original modern screenings of the tragedy “Othello” by William Shakespeare, which has not been performed in Latvia before. Significantly – the main characters in this British drama are played by screen legends, actors Patrick McGoohan, Betsy Blair, Paul Harris, Marti Stevens and Lord Richard Attenborough, and scenes of the movie also display the most famous British and American jazz musicians of the time.

The description of the movie says – London, in the 60’s. The century of jazz and rejoicing. Musician Aurelius Rex and his wife, a retired singer Delia, arrive to an exquisite dinner hosted by an influential music promoter Rod Hamilton. Young and ambitious drummer Johnnie Cousin wants to start his own band and sees Delia as his soloist. After receiving a clear refusal, Johnnie begins a series of machinations at the party, telling others around that Delia has been having an affair with band manager Cass.

Dr. philol. Viktors Freibergs is one of the most knowledgeable, most active and most competent lecturers in Latvia, who operates in scientific research fields related to 20th century British literature, the development tendencies of literature theory, as well as cinema history and studies of cinema narrative semiotics. The total length of the performance with the introductory lecture: approximately 2 hours.

The film is offered within Shakespeare Film Festival in cooperation with the State Culture Capital Foundation, the film project “Spektrs”, CREA Promotion and the British Council.

 “Liepaja Art Forum” will take place from 5 to 13 August in the Liepaja urban environment and at the concert hall “Lielais dzintars”. The programme for the integrated forum will include music and art events, as well as will offer free of charge cinema and theatre performances.
